Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Stewarding the responsibility we have been given.
Titanic - not paying attention to something under the surface and so it sunk.
God has set eternity in the hearts of men - divine dream to unlease that in the Community.
Everything you do is connected to your heart - monitoring our behaviour while ignoring your heart. “Be good” “restrain your behaviour” - instructing your kids around your behaviour but solomon is wiser than that and goes beyond the surface of your life, beyond the behaviour, go to the heart of it because sooner of later the things at the heart have the recking capacity.
What we give ourselves to inwardly and secretly eventually shapes your life.
Don’t worry about your behaviour - the stuff that you are leaning into will eventually flow out. Originates in the secret paces of our life eventually spills out.
When you speak words that aren’t of you i.e. being mean or harsh - not an exception to your character but a reflection of your character, the things you work so hard to control. We know this is true because everything comes from the heart because we do everything from the heart.
Mark 7:14-23 “Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them” - anger, jealousy, inappropriate humour, meanness etc.
The level of heath in our cities/marriages/relationships is never greater than the health in our heart.
Keeping an eye on your behaviour is not difficult, you have a boat load of people in your life when you’re not behaving properly. You can get way off base in your heart without anyone every knowing. It is your job to guard your heart.
It doesn’t mean guarding your heart from other people - it means guarding your heart from you. It’s not other people who are wrecking your heart, it’s you.
Everytime we lean into dishonour we separate ourselves from the wisdom of the father. God granted Solomon wisdom and his heart grew to the size of the shore by the sea. We have to set the climate for our own lives. Positioning your heart to honour God. When we manage our own heart we take responsibility for our own stuff. Guarding your heart creates a pathway of truth.
Boundaries - a place where your heart is guarded, boundaries to your love, Jesus did life with 12 people - he didn’t think he could relentlessly love more than 12.
Teach us to number our days - the right priorities and focus. Routinely wise in our lives.
